Private credit
meets the chips.

The AI buildout increasingly borrows its way to capacity. Private lenders and separate financing vehicles buy chips or fund campuses, then collect lease payments from the companies using them. If customer cash arrives late, chips lose resale value, or refinancing gets expensive, the funding can break before demand for AI disappears.

01 · THE LEVERAGE PATH

Rent the chips. Keep the obligation.

Our thesis: a financing shock can turn into a hardware spending shock.

A special-purpose vehicle (SPV) is a separate company that holds assets and financing. It can move borrowing away from a tenant’s balance sheet, but leases, guarantees and customer concentration still connect the risks. A chip-backed loan depends on both rental cash flow and what the hardware can fetch if that cash flow fails.

The duration mismatch is simple: the lender still wants payment after a customer contract ends. Renewals, replacement customers or refinancing must fill the gap. Lower GPU rents weaken both cash generation and collateral value; tighter credit can then force a smaller buildout. This is an analytical transmission path, not a confirmed default.

Insurers are already part of the financing audience. The FT reports CoreWeave is seeking more insurance capital through investment-grade structures. Its secured facility and unsecured corporate bonds carry different risks. Financial Times · CoreWeave courts insurers (syndicated on Yahoo) · Oct 14, 2026 ↗

Chamath Palihapitiya · Social Capital

“Is private credit, which is funding a growing portion of the AI buildout, a bubble?”

His Oct 9 piece puts the Anthropic vehicle above $23B of quarterly US PE-backed direct lending; direct loans at $96B (2010) → $2.4T (2025), including >$1T software / tech; and AI spreads at 6.2 percentage points over benchmark versus 6.1 for other loans. He describes five-year CoreWeave borrowing against roughly three-year contracts. These are his data and framing, not independently revalidated aggregates or a description of every current facility. His historical xAI / Jupiter prices appear above. Chamath / Social Capital · attributed analysis · Oct 9, 2026 ↗
